If you’re expecting a baby – or have a new baby – and plan to travel by car, a safe, well-fitting car seat is an essential buy. To help you choose the right one, we’ve researched and tested a wide range of options to find the most comfortable, user-friendly and reliable baby car seats available now.

We’ve included both infant carriers that can be used with a newborn pushchair to create a travel system, and longer-lasting seats that can take your child up to age 4 and beyond. We’ve also taken into account safety testing carried out by ADAC, one of Europe’s leading car seat testing bodies. Where a seat in this list has been tested by ADAC, we’ve included the score. In these tests, a lower score is better, and every ADAC-tested seat in this roundup scored 2.5 or below, which is classed as “Good”.

Best baby car seats at a glance

How we chose the best baby car seats

When selecting the best baby car seats, we considered ease of use, installation, comfort for baby, lifespan, size and weight, age appropriateness, extra convenience and safety features, and whether each seat offers good value for money.

Our best-buy roundups draw on a mix of independent reviews, MadeForMums Awards testing, feedback from our home testing panel and insight from our Top Testers Club. Most of the seats in this list have also been tested by experienced parent journalists, and where relevant we’ve included ADAC scores too.

This is not a ranked list from 1 to 11. Instead, each product here has been chosen because it stands out for a different family need, whether that’s low weight, easy installation, lie-flat comfort, long-term use or travel-system compatibility.

Our list includes infant carriers that you can use on a newborn pushchair to create a travel system but have a shorter lifespan, as well as seats that will last your child for longer, up to age 4 and even beyond.

If you want to skip straight to the products, head to the roundup below. Or, if you’d like more help choosing, you’ll find our baby car seat buying advice and FAQs at the end of this article.

Avionaut Pixel Pro 2.0, £239 (+£199 for ISOFIX base)

Best for: Parents who want an exceptionally lightweight infant carrier

Avionaut Pixel Pro 2.0 car seat tester picture and product shot

Why we chose it: At just 2.5kg, this is the lightest car seat in our roundup, but it still feels thoughtfully designed, supportive and genuinely useful for everyday life with a newborn.

The unique seating position, side impact safety protection, soft-to-touch fabrics and collision replacement scheme are all excellent draws of the Pixel Pro 2.0 C. Prior to testing this car seat, Avionaut was a little-known brand to us, but we can now wholeheartedly recommend them as a high-quality, expertly designed, safety-focused brand. The quality speaks for itself and we could rest easy knowing that our baby was in the safest possible place whilst travelling.

The Pixel Pro 2.0 stands out because it balances very low weight with a strong focus on ergonomics and baby comfort. Its modular insert system, designed with physiotherapists, helps create a straighter seating position for newborns and can be adjusted as your baby grows. It’s also been awarded the AGR certificate by the German Association for a Healthy Back.

Safety details are reassuring too, including side impact protection and a Cloud Care memory foam insert designed to absorb force in a crash. Add in the fact that Avionaut will replace the seat for free if it’s involved in a collision within the first two years, and it feels like a very considered buy for new parents.

Cybex Cloud T tester image and product shot

Why we chose it: The Cloud T combines strong safety credentials with travel-system flexibility and a clever lie-flat recline when used out of the car.

My daughter seemed really comfortable and appeared to snuggle into it and sleep more soundly than she did in her previous car seat. The padding is really soft and cushioned on both the seat interior and also the straps.

Joie Calmi R129 car cot, £200 (+£190 for ISOFIX base)

Best for: Lie-flat travel

Joie Calmi car cot tester picture and product shot

Why we chose it: For parents who prioritise lie-flat travel from day one, this car cot offers a genuinely different option from a standard infant carrier.

There is no doubt that the Joie Calmi R129 car cot is a cleverly designed baby product and I love how it doubles up as both a car seat and carrycot, while also creating a safe cocoon for my baby. However, as a busy mum-of-2 who often travels with both my children in tow, I can’t make as much use of the Calmi car cot as I would have liked as it takes up nearly 3 of my car back seats.
MFM reviewer Georgette, who tested the Joie Calmi with her 11-week-old daughter

What we like

  • Lie-flat position for younger babies
  • Doubles as a car seat and carrycot
  • Comfortable, plush environment
  • Compatible with Joie pushchairs

What to keep in mind

  • Takes up a lot of space in the car
  • Doesn’t rotate
  • Shorter lifespan than most seats here

The Calmi is particularly appealing for parents who want the reassurance of a lie-flat travel position and a product that also works on a pushchair chassis. The trade-off is size: once installed with the i-Base Encore (£190), it takes up around two rear seats, so it won’t suit every family car or every household setup.

The Joie Sprint is a great seat for parents who are looking for an easy-to-install car seat that can be transferred and used in a variety of settings. With built-in ISOFIX connectors, it's a bit of a game-changer for those who don’t want the hassle of a separate base.

Designed for babies from birth to around 12 months, the Sprint feels especially well suited to parents who want a simple, secure seat that’s easy to fit and remove. During testing, the integrated ISOFIX setup was the standout feature, making installation feel quick and reassuring without the need for extra kit.

Comfort is another plus, with a supportive newborn insert and a seat position that kept baby upright without looking scrunched. It won’t suit parents looking for a rotating seat or something longer-lasting, but for everyday ease and portability, it’s a very appealing option.

Why we chose it: With a smooth 360° swivel, compact design and use from birth to around 4 years, the Graco Turn2Me DLX offers a lot of everyday practicality for a more affordable price than many rivals.

For parents looking for a premium, back-saving 360° spin without the £300+ price tag, the Turn2Me DLX is a brilliant middle-ground that doesn't compromise on safety or build quality.
MFM reviewer Lou

What we like

  • Very smooth 360° rotation
  • Suitable from birth to around 4 years

The Turn2Me DLX is designed to grow with your child from newborn to toddlerhood, and its biggest selling point is how easy it makes everyday loading and unloading. Louise found the 360° rotation impressively smooth, especially compared with pricier rivals, and liked the reassurance of the red-to-green indicators during installation.

While it’s not the plushest seat in its class, it delivers where it matters most: ease of use, safety reassurance and very good value for money.

Doona i car seat tester picture and product shot

Why we chose it: For city living and quick in-and-out trips, the built-in wheels make this one of the most convenient products here.

The convenience of not having to disturb a napping baby whilst we nipped into the shops or did the school run was well worth the price tag from our perspective. The quality build and materials do not disappoint

Maxi-Cosi Emerald car seat tester picture and product shot

Why we chose it: The Emerald 360 Pro stands out for its long lifespan, smooth 360° swivel and clever SlideTech™ base, which pulls the seat out towards you for easier access.

When I tested it with my baby I found the 360° swivel works well in a tight parking space and I’m a big fan of the harness because it actually stays open while you’re strapping your baby in and it’s easy to pull the cord for a snug fit.

If you want one car seat that can last right through childhood, the Emerald 360 Pro is a compelling option. Its SlideTech™ base is the real standout, making it much easier to get your child in and out without leaning awkwardly into the car, while the long lifespan helps justify the high upfront cost.

During testing, it worked particularly well for older children and felt safe, sturdy and easy to install. It’s less convincing as a newborn-first choice than some infant carriers in this roundup, but as a long-term investment seat, it has a lot going for it.

What to look for when buying a baby car seat

Will you be using your car seat as part of a travel system? – A travel system combines a buggy with an infant carrier. The car seat clicks or slots onto the buggy or chassis, making it easier to move your baby from car to pushchair. If that matters to you, check your pushchair brand’s compatibility list before you buy.

How long will the seat stay rear-facing? – Children under 15 months must travel rear-facing or lateral in seats approved to UN Regulation No. 129 (R129). Rear-facing travel gives better protection for a young child’s head, neck and spine in a collision, and many experts recommend keeping children rear-facing for much longer where possible.

What type of installation do you want? – Baby car seats are typically installed either with ISOFIX or with your car’s 3-point seatbelt. Both can be safe when used correctly, but many parents find ISOFIX simpler and more reassuring.

Is your car ISOFIX compatible? – Not all cars have ISOFIX points, so always check your car against the manufacturer’s fitting guide before you buy. Here you’ll find a list of compatibility checkers for major brands.

Is the base included? – For infant carriers, the base is often sold separately. For larger 0+/1 seats, the base is usually integrated. A base can make fitting easier and may add convenience features such as rotation or installation indicators, but it can significantly increase the total price.

What type of car seat should you buy for your newborn?

For newborns, you’ll usually be looking at an i-Size / R129 car seat, although some older Group 0, Group 0+, Group 0+/1 or Group 0+/1/2/3 seats are still on sale.

All car seats must meet European safety standards. The two you’re most likely to see are ECE R129, which is height-based, and the older ECE R44, which is weight-based.

R129 replaced ECE R44, so no new seats are being tested to the older standard, but older models that were designed before 2019 are still legal to use in the UK. These older seats tend to be grouped like this:

  • Group 0: birth to 10kg, usually lie-flat carrycot styles
  • Group 0+: birth to 13kg, usually infant carriers
  • Group 0+/1: birth to 18kg
  • Group 0+/1/2/3: birth to 36kg or 135cm tall

All Group 0+ seats are rear-facing, and all baby seats approved for very young children are designed to keep them rear-facing until at least 15 months. After that, you can move to a second-stage seat or a multi-stage seat when appropriate.

What is i-Size and R129?

R129 is the most up-to-date European-wide regulation for child car seats. It is based on height rather than weight and requires children to remain rear-facing until at least 15 months. It also includes side-impact testing.

i-Size and R129 are closely linked. ECE R129 is the regulation itself, while i-Size is the customer-facing term most people see on packaging and product pages.

What are the differences between ISOFIX and Universal installation?

What is ISOFIX?

Most car seat models now offer ISOFIX installation. ISOFIX seats connect directly to metal anchor points in your vehicle, which can make fitting quicker and reduce the chance of installation errors. Some seats also use a support leg or tether for extra stability.

What is Universal installation?

Seats that can be secured using only the car’s 3-point seatbelt are classed as Universal, because they can be fitted in any car with a suitable seatbelt. These can be just as safe when installed correctly, but many parents prefer the reassurance of ISOFIX.

When can a baby go into a forward-facing seat?

Legally, children can move into a forward-facing seat when they are old enough and using a suitable next-stage seat, but under R129 they must remain rear-facing until at least 15 months. Many newer seats now support extended rear-facing to age 4 or beyond.

What is the 2 hour rule?

This is the widely used safety recommendation that babies should not spend more than 2 hours at a time in a standard car seat. The exception is a lie-flat car seat. That guidance also applies when the car seat is attached to a pram chassis.

If you’re taking a long journey, plan regular stops so your baby can come out of the seat, stretch and change position.

How much does a baby car seat from birth cost?

Prices vary widely. In this roundup, seats start from under £100 and rise to almost £400, with some integrated-base options costing more again. You may also need to budget for a separate ISOFIX base, which can add a significant extra cost.

Price alone is not an indicator of safety. The most important thing is choosing the seat that fits your child, your car and your daily routine best.
