A sleeping bag is one of the most useful items you can buy for your new baby. There are numerous ones on the market but I found the John Lewis range to be great value.

The great thing about sleeping bags in general is that they keep your baby warm as it stays in place all night. I’ve used one since Biba was 4 months old. On the odd occasion where I’ve tried a blanket, she’s woken up, possibly from being cold or because the blanket has slipped off and wrapped around her. Using a sleeping bag has also completely eradicated my fear that she will slip under the covers.

We use the sleeping bag as part of our bedtime routine. As soon as her bag goes on she knows it’s bedtime. It’s easy to pack when we go away and makes Biba feel at home wherever she is. With the John Lewis own brand sleeping bag, you’re guaranteed the John Lewis quality.

What we love

The John Lewis sleeping bags are made with good quality fabric and come in choice of colours, sizes and tog ratings. They’re lined with a soft towelling fabric, which makes it very soft for Biba. They wash brilliantly and I don’t even have to iron them – a big plus! They’re a great alternative to the traditional blankets and quilts.

The larger sizes of the John Lewis sleeping bags have a zip running all the way down the middle. I find this a lot easier to do up than another brand of sleeping bags I’ve used, where the zip runs down the side. If I lay Biba in the bag when she’s already in her cot, it’s awkward to reach a side zip, especially if she’s wriggling around! The zip on the John Lewis sleeping bag connects at the top and you run the zip down to finish at the feet. The consequence of this is that Biba hasn’t yet worked out how to undo it!

Another feature that makes the John Lewis sleeping bag easier is that you slide your baby’s arms through holes, rather like you’re putting on a waistcoat. This is a great feature, as some other brands have poppers that you have to fasten over the shoulders, which is difficult to do on a moving child – and Biba has worked out how to undo poppers!

What to watch out for

Make sure you get the correct tog rating not only the time of year, but also the temperature of your house. Our house is very well insulated so I never use more than a 1 tog, even in the winter.

Who is the John Lewis sleeping bag best for?

Mums sick of fussing over blankets and who value a trusted brand.

MadeForMums verdict

Sleeping bags in general are a great product. John Lewis sleeping bags offer good quality at a decent price. The fabrics are modern, but still cute. The fastenings work better than some of the competitors.
