BEST PRESCHOOLER MAGNET: With their wibbly wobbly heads, brightly coloured hair and big glittery eyes, these dolls (there are 4) weren’t initially top of our list – until we saw how enraptured our child judges were with them. They’re a good size (so clothes and shoes are easy to put on and take off) and their ‘interactive’ accessories are fun: we like how the cereal disappears from the spoon when the Donatina doll (pictured) ‘eats’ it.

Wow! Stuff Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak, £60

BEST FOR WOW FACTOR: Yep, this wizarding cloak really does make you invisible (on its app at least). It had our testers properly gasping. It’s super-easy to set up and we like how it comes with a stand for keeping your phone or tablet steady while you film your disappearing acts. Great fun for kids who love making videos.

BEST FOR INTERACTIVE CUDDLES: One of the best interactive toys we’ve seen in a while – and lovely that it’s pitched at younger children. Our child judges loved Cubby’s honey bottle and comb – and how he reacts to them. And we love the amazingly realistic way he pricks up his ears when you speak to him.

BEST TRADITIONAL BUY: It’s beautifully made in sturdy painted wood, and it’s nice and compact – meaning, unlike a bigger toy kitchen, it can be carried from room to room (or house to house). And we love that it comes with peas, as well as the fish and chips!

BEST FOR A MODERN TWIST ON AN OLD FAVOURITE: How clever to add a voice-activated Banker to the classic Monopoly board! BEST FOR AW! FACTOR: This soft toy melted all our hearts for the way it arrives as a trembly ball of fluff – which gradually calms as you wash and dry and cuddle it, and then transforms into either a dog or cat. Our child judges loved the surprise of finding out which animal they’d ‘rescued’.

What are the MadeForMums Toy Awards about?

The MadeForMums Toy Awards are all about celebrating the best in children’s toys, from toys for newborns to toys for pre-teens – and all ages, stages and genres in between.

We’re known here at MadeForMums for our expert, honest and thorough product reviews, and we’ve brought those same standards to our Toy Awards – knowing that the award of a winner’s badge from us will be recognised both by parents and major retailers as a sign of outstanding quality and play potential.

How were the toys judged?

We want to recognise the great toys that entertain, educate and excite children of all ages and stages, so we divided all our award entries into 40 different categories, shortlisted the very best of them, and then judged all those on their play potential and value for money.

We also created 8 Editor’s Choice awards – to showcase the toys that our judges thought had something about them that was particularly special.

Who were the judges?

Of course the best people to rate toys are the children who play with them, so we recruited a panel of over 500 child judges, ranging in age from 12 weeks to 15 years, and set them (and their parents) the arduous task of playing with our toy entries and telling us exactly what they thought of them. And they certainly told us EVERYTHING!

We also had several judging days held at MadeForMums HQ, where all the shortlisted toys were tried out by an awesomely influential panel, including:
