10 signs your baby’s cough could be something more serious

The warning signs that mean you need to call a doctor


Usually a baby cough is not a major cause for concern but if the cough is accompanied by these other signs of illness you should contact your GP:


1. If your baby has temperature – we’re talking 38°C or higher

2. Has forceful, repeated vomiting that continues for more than 24 hours

3. If you’ve noticed that your baby has become particularly lethargic or irritable 

4. If your little one has been suffering badly with diarrhoea for more than 24 hours 

5. If you’re seeing signs of a swollen abdomen – this one is a bit difficult to spot but you may be able to tell if your baby’s belly is looking more rounded or is more sensitive than usual

6. If your baby is showing any of these signs of dehydration

  • dry mouth
  • dark yellow urine
  • dry nappy for 6-8 hours

7. If there are any signs of blood in your little one’s poo or vomit

8. If your baby is having convulsions 

9. If your little one refuses feeds for more than 6-8 hours 

10 Is showing signs of jaundice (the whites of his eyes are yellowish and there’s a yellowish, tanned look to his skin)
