Beyonce and Jay-Z’s baby
Best friend and former Destiny’s Child bandmate, Kelly Rowland, that’s who!
“I’m 1,000% sure that Kelly will be a godmother – no doubt about it. I think Beyonce’s already told Kelly about [her] baby role. And of course [she’d] be so happy to do it!” a source reportedly told Showbiz Spy.
“I’m so happy for her and her husband and just excited to be an auntie,” said Kelly, according to MTV.
“I’ll help take care of my ‘sister’ and her husband’s baby. I’m not ready for babies yet. I can watch them take care of this little baby,” added Kelly.
Kelly’s not the only one though – Jay-Z’s pal, Kanye West, has also apparently been asked to be godfather. Beyonce and Jay-Z have even been asked to be godparents for a fellow singer’s newborn, despite the singer not having a man in her life yet!
And can you guess which celebrity newborn had five celebrities fighting over godparent status before her birth?
Harper Seven Beckham
Victoria Beckham‘s little one is already accustomed to the lavish celebrity lifestyle and she’s only 4 months old! Destined to be a super-stylish fashionista like Posh Spice, Harper Seven will no doubt grow up to be one popular girl – but her popularity began way before she was even born!
With the three Beckham boys having Elton John as godfather (and Liz Hurley as godmum!), it would have been an obvious choice for Elton to step up to the role again. Then again, it could also have been a good idea for Elton to reciprocate and ask David Beckham and Victoria to be godparents to his newborn. But guess who Elton chose instead?
Lady GaGa, even though the singer has admitted that babies scare her!
Despite Elton not making the cut, Harper Seven’s pre-birth popularity was through the roof with not one, but five celebrities vying to be a godparent, from Desperate Housewife actress Eva Longoria to Paris Hilton, Gordon Ramsey and even Prince William and Kate!
“David and Victoria have already discussed godparents and they both think it would be wonderful if William and Kate would agree,” a source reportedly said.
Victoria isn’t the only Spice Girl to have asked the heir to the throne to be a godfather – Emma Bunton did too, according to Now magazine. Apparently, Baby Spice once flirted with the Prince after one of their shows in 1995 and has kept in touch ever since.
“Victoria was thrilled to be asked to be godmother. Although they fell out when Geri walked out on the Spice Girls years ago, they became really close friends again. Geri’s relied on her old friend for advice on motherhood,” a source said in an interview with Ace Showbiz, in April 2007.
Geri apparently also asked long-time friend and George Michael‘s now ex-partner Kenny Goss to be godfather to her little girl.
Turning to your “co-workers” for godparent duty seems to be a popular trend amongst celebrities. Stateside, Friends actress Courtney Cox chose co-star Jennifer Aniston to be daughter Coco Arquette‘s godmum. Jennifer accepted the responsibility at a ceremony for 10-month-old Coco in April 2005 – the same year Jennifer divorced from husband Brad Pitt.
In July 2011, 7-year-old Coco was spotted skipping out of a hair salon, with bright blonde highlights in her hair. Did she ask her hairdresser for the “Rachel” like so many of us have done?
Lila Grace Moss and Iris Law
Kate Moss is godmother to long-time friend Sadie Frost‘s only daughter, Iris, 11. In return, Sadie and Iris’ dad, Jude Law, are godparents to Kate’s daughter, Lila Grace Moss, 9. Kate also asked friend and celebrity hairdresser James Brown to be Lila’s godfather.
The mum-of-one and Rimmel model has been best friends with Sadie Frost for many years. “Kate is inspirational,” Sadie once said about the supermodel, adding that she is a supportive and loving best friend.
In the true godmother spirit, Kate threw her goddaughter Iris a model-themed 8th birthday party back in 2009, where she taught Iris and her friends (including Lila Grace of course) how to walk the catwalk. Kate even gave the girls handfuls of clothes and a makeover!
Sadie and Jude met whilst acting on the film Shopping and married in 1997. As well as daughter Iris, the couple have two sons, Rafferty, 15, and Rudy, 9. When Kate married Jamie Hince on July 2, 2011, she asked Sadie and her ex-partner Jude Law if their son Rafferty could be an usher at her wedding. Rafferty reportedly had to hand out copies of the order of the service and also showed guests to their seats.
The two families are so close, Sadie Frost’s mum, Mary Davidson, is Kate Moss’ nanny!
In October 2003, Sadie and Jude divorced, but the pair are still amicable. They even holidayed in Las Vegas together with their three children earlier this year.
Damien Charles Hurley
When model and actress Liz Hurley gave birth to son Damien Charles Hurley, in 2002, she turned to her ex-partner of 13 years (and the guy who put her in the spotlight in the first place) Hugh Grant for godfather duty!
Hugh has been spotted on a number of occasions with Damien, 9, but has admitted he takes his godfather duties very lightly.
“I have a very good assistant who has them all on her computer, so an alarm comes on when it’s someone’s birthday. She chooses the present and I pay for it – that’s where my godfatherly duties end,” he once said, according to Contact Music.
There have been rumours speculating that Hugh’s new girlfriend, Tinglan Hong, is pregnant. Would he ask Liz Hurley to be godmother? We’ll have to wait and see!
Like Liz and Hugh, Madonna and Guy are still good friends after spliting, with Madonna recently wishing her ex-husband the best of luck when his girlfriend Jacqui Ainsley announced her pregnancy. Jacqui gave birth to a baby boy on Monday 5th September 2011.
Madonna gave birth to Guy’s son, Rocco, on August 11, 2000, and asked world-famous singer Sting to be godfather. Madonna also has an adopted son, David, and in 2009, she adopted a girl, Mercy James.
“They don’t speak. I can’t tell you exactly why they had the falling out, but Gwyneth can be jealous and competititve,” said a source, reports Hollyscoop.
It’s a good job Gwyn didn’t pick Madonna to be godmother to her two children, Apple, 7, and Moses, 5, then isn’t it?
“I like to think I’m a really great, fun godfather. It’s much more interesting than trying to be a good influence on her. I’m a comedian – it’s what they expect,” said Simon in an interview with Contact Music, back in 2007.
Apple Blythe Alison Martin was born on May 14, 2004, and after her birth, Gwyneth explained her unusual baby name choice on Oprah, saying that the name Apple “conjured such a lovely picture for me”. Her second child, Moses Bruce Anthony Martin arrived on April 8, 2006, and was named after the song Chris wrote for Gwyn before their wedding four years earlier.
Although married for nearly eight years, which co-star actor (and godfather to twins) did Gwyneth recently say was an “amazing kisser”?
Max and Emme Lopez
Tom Cruise, dad to Suri and an “amazing kisser” to Gywn Paltrow, is godfather to twins Max and Emme Lopez.
“I did a little cameo once at the beginning of Austin Powers 3, I think it was, and I got to make out with Tom Cruise. He was an amazing kisser!” said Gwyneth to OK! magazine.
We wonder what Tom’s wife, Katie Holmes, thinks of this revelation? Tom and Katie are parents to 5-year-old Suri Cruise. And with Tom spending his fortune on Suri’s rumoured £2million designer wardrobe, private jets and funding the schoolchild’s love of heels, it’s fair to say he likes spoiling his child. It’s no wonder that Suri made the top 10 most spoilt celebrity children. But does Tom do the same for his godchildren Max and Emme Lopez?
Good friend Jennifer Lopez reportedly asked Tom to be godfather to her twins after their birth on February 22, 2008.
“Tom is delighted. Marc wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to have a Scientologist as the kids’ godfather, especially as he and Jennifer are both Catholic…But in the end Jennifer managed to convince him to agree,” an insider told Entertainment News.
Tom apparently splashed out nearly £200,000 for Max and Emme’s christening outfits as well as ordering a giant fish tank for their nursery and giving them complete Disney DVD box sets. Now that’s what we call one generous godfather!
Vivienne and Knox Jolie-Pitt
George Clooney is godfather to friend Brad Pitt’s toddler twins Vivienne and Knox Jolie-Pitt.
Brad and wife Angelina Jolie welcomed their twins on July 12, 2008. Rumours around Hollywood speculated who the high-profile couple would choose to be godparents, with George confirming he was godfather to reporters following him outside a restaurant in Los Angeles back in April 2008, according to Now magazine.
George and Brad have been friends for years, usually making the headlines together for pulling practical pranks on one another. A few months after George confirmed his role as godfather to Knox and Vivienne, Brad told everyone that George in fact hated children!
“Are you kidding? He hates children. I love the twins too much to subject them to George,” Brad joked, reports Now magazine.
Brad and Angelina also have four other children, Maddox, 10, Pax, 7, Zahara, 6, and Shiloh, 5.
Voice actress Mindy Cohn, most famously known as the voice of Velma in Scooby Doo, is godmother to all six Jolie-Pitt children. The Jolie-Pitts met Mindy, 44, through Angelina’s older brother, James Haven. Brad and Angelina reportedly gave Mindy a diamond ring to thank her for her role in their children’s lives, according to US Weekly.
Even after Brad’s joke about pal George Clooney hating children, fellow celebrity actress Nicole Kidman asked George to be godfather to her daughter, Sunday Rose! Sunday Rose is Nicole’s 3-year-old daughter with husband Keith Urban. The couple have a surrogate daughter, Faith, who is 10 months old. Nicole also has two adopted children, Isabella, 18, and Connor, 16, with former partner, Tom Cruise.
“They are great friends and she can think of no one more perfect for the job,” a source told the Daily Mirror.
However, this time it was George’s turn to laugh off the reports.
“I see Nicole probably once a year at a party or something. I love her. She’s terrific, but it’s not like we are dear friends,” said George, reported Now magazine. Ouch!
But if you thought this “is he/isn’t he” debate was strange, guess which politician was recently discovered to be godfather to a famous media mogul’s children?
Grace and Chloe Murdoch
Tony Blair is godfather to two of Rupert Murdoch’s children, Grace, 9, and Chloe Murdoch, 8.
It was only during the News of the World scandal that it emerged that our former Prime Minister was made godfather to the media mogul’s kids.
However, in an interview in 2011, Rupert’s wife Wendi Murdoch revealed that Tony and Rupert were the “closest of friends” and that Tony attended the ceremony “garbed in white”, according to the Telegraph. Apparently Tony and Rupert are mutual friends of Queen Rania of Jordan, and it was Queen Rania who hosted the baptism of Rupert’s two girls.
And the list goes on…
- Jake Gyllenhaal is godfather to Michelle Williams and the late Heath Ledger’s child, Matilda Rose Ledger, 5.
- Victor Gauber is godfather to Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck’s daughter, Violet Affleck, 5.
- Macaulay Culkin is godfather to the late Michael Jackson’s children, Prince, 14, Paris, 13, and Blanket, 10. The late Elizabeth Taylor was their godmother.
- Simon Cowell is godfather to Sinitta’s adopted children, Zac and Magdalena.
- Drew Barrymore is godmother to the late Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, 19.
- Robbie Williams is godfather to his best friend Jonathan Wilke’s son, Mickey, 5.
- Rumours suggest that George Lopez is godfather of Sandra Bullock’s adopted toddler son, Louis Bardo Bullock.
